5 Tips for the Perfect Spring Break Tan
It only took one stint with skin cancer to ensure I will NEVER tan outside again. While I was sporting SPF 50+ and a coverup during my spring break trip to Florida last week, I definitely utilized self-tanner for a little pre-vacation glow.
Exfoliate | In the past, I’ve been so ignorant to the benefits of exfoliating before self tanning. I was so spoiled with my Jergens in-shower self-tanner that I never experienced a streaky application. With mousse self-tanning products on the other hand, it is so important to use a body scrub to make sure your tan applies, and later fades, evenly. Jergens makes a really great In-Shower Body Scrub that acts as an efficient self-tanning primer, but any oil-free scrub you find should do the trick.
Moisturize your Knees, Ankles & Elbows | There’s nothing worse that orange knees, ankles & elbows. By moisturizing these dryer areas before putting on a tanner, it’ll ensure the tan doesn’t settle and become orange or streaky. I first moisturize my knees, ankles and elbows and then skip them all together when applying the tanner.
Wash your Hands | While I prefer applying self tanner with a mitt, if you use your hands you have to make sure to wash your hands with soap and water after. Last spring break, I was exhausted and running around campus before hoping on a plane to Florida. It wasn’t until the next morning that I realized my hands looked like I ate an entire bag of Cheetos! They were bright orange! Never again. Now, I use this mitt religiously when applying self-tanner to my body, and wash my hands directly after applying self-tanner to my face.
Wear an Old T-shirt | I’m sure I’m not the only one who has inadvertently stained my pajamas or towel with self tanner. I can’t help it, it just comes with the territory! Now every time I self-tan, I have an old t-shirt and shorts to throw on.
Make Sure your Tan is Dry | Another huge mistake I have learned time and time again is that you have to make sure your tan is dry before getting dressed and carrying on with your day. I have been famous for self tanning and then sitting down at my laptop and getting creases on my arms and legs
