Under Canvas Lake Powell - Grand Staircase Review

Under Canvas is an upscale camping experience that offers everything you love about the great outdoors coupled with luxury accommodations. On top of being super Instagrammable, Under Canvas also provides an idyllic and rustic retreat. If the organic shower products, en-suite bathroom, private deck, and plush king-sized bed aren’t enough to entice you, then maybe the complimentary s’mores and culinary experience will.

From the Deluxe tent to the on-site slot canyon, here is our full review of Under Canvas Lake Powell - Grand Staircase.

The Location: Under Canvas Lake Powell

We decided to stay at Under Canvas Lake Powell - Grand Staircase on our recent out west hiking trip. Lake Powell is one of the 12 Under Canvas locations in addition to other popular destinations like Moab, Zion, Glacier, and Grand Canyon.

Funny enough, we passed multiple Under Canvas locations while on our trip. While we originally planned to stay at the Grand Canyon location, our trip itinerary changed slightly, and the Lake Powell location was the best optimized for our new route.

The location and scenery were both simply breathtaking. These rustic accommodations were only a few miles away from the renowned Amangiri resort. I told Matt repeatedly we shared the same scenery as a one-of-a-kind, five-star, luxury resort. He didn’t find this as incredible as I did.

The Experience

From the delightful culinary experience to the rustic atmosphere and welcoming staff, we had a wonderful time at Under Canvas. Upon arriving, we were greeted by incredibly welcoming staff who checked us in and drove us and our bags to our tent via a golf cart. Seemingly every detail was thought of, even down to a cooler and a walk-through of the grounds.

Matt and I took the afternoon to explore the on-site slot canyon, clean up, and read on our private deck.

On-site dining

Under Canvas Lake Powell on-site dining

The on-site restaurant at the Lake Powell location opened at 5 pm, so we ventured around dinner time to the shared community space. We ordered drinks, a grazing charcuterie board, prickly pear lemonade, and spicy chicken sandwiches. Everything was delicious! Being able to order a charcuterie board is definitely my preferred form of camping.

Deluxe Tent

The tent itself is decked out with a king-sized bed, luxe linens, organic bath products, USB battery packs, West Elm furniture, and an en-suite bathroom (including a flushing toilet, shower, and sink). The bed was incredibly comfortable. Matt and I both agreed it was our best night's sleep all trip.

Final Thoughts on Under Canvas Lake Powell

One thing to remember before booking your Under Canvas stay is that this is, first and foremost, a camping experience. You cannot have food in the tents and you’re at the mercy of the elements (wind, rain, hot, cold). It was incredibly windy the night of our stay, which made it a tad difficult to fall asleep. The rustling of the tent in the wind is louder than you’d expect. Thankfully, I packed earplugs for this exact reason. If you’re not a fan of camping, you may want to rethink booking a tent at this rustic retreat.

Under Canvas is also not a budget-friendly destination. The deluxe tent was the most expensive accommodation on our trip. While the stay was well worth it, it certainly was a splurge.
