A Lazy Girl’s Guide to Fitness

When the weather gets cold, I lack the motivation to do anything except wrap up in a blanket. As summer is quickly approaching, I’m becoming more motivated to get back into my fitness routine. (All my friends are laughing at me right now, but I promise I’m really trying!) Although I used to workout every day after school in high school, I just got out of my routine when I came to college. This post is called “A Lazy Girl’s Guide,” because I’ve become a pro at putting off working out when I’m busy.

With final exams just around the corner, and bikini season following, I love finding quick and easy ways to get in a mini workout wherever I am. The exercises below take no time at all and can be done anywhere, even a dorm room!

Disclaimer: I am definitely not a pro on this topic. (I’ve eaten thousands of calories of Goldfish this semester…) I’m just sharing what I like to do!

Forearm Plank (target area: abs) ~ Flutter kicks  (target area: abs) ~ Clams (target area: glutes) ~ Doney Kicks (target area: glutes)

After a couple weeks, you can slowly increase the intensity of these four exercises. Try adding side planks, 1-minute intervals of flutter kicks, and 50 clams and donkey kicks on each side. For the side plank, work you way up to doing one-minute forearm, one-minute on the left side, one-minute on the right, and then finish up with forearm planks for the last minute. Yes, that’s four minutes in total, and yes it is not fun, but ab exercises are so rewarding! (Claire taught me this one, so if you have any questions email me and I’ll ask her!)

On a more serious and personal note, I want to talk about an important day of remembrance close to every Hokie’s heart that took place last week. (We Remember)

3.2 for 32

Last Saturday, I joined 16,000 other Hokies at the 3.2 for 32 race at Virginia Tech in remembrance of the 32 lives tragically taken from our community on April 16, 2007.  I feel beyond blessed to be a part of such an incredibly supportive community that joins together in times of hardship. I’m challenging myself to always be a positive presence in someone’s life. It is so easy to get caught up in the stress of college life, that I forget how other’s perceive my stress. I’m challenging myself to share a smile, hold a door, say thank you, and take the time to listen to others every day. You never know how that small action will impact someone’s day.
